Bundestag calls on Scholz to urgently deliver Taurus to Ukraine

Members of the German Bundestag are calling on the government and Chancellor Olaf Scholz personally to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles as soon as possible.

According to CDU MP Roderich Kiesewetter, "Now that the discussion about Taurus has begun and is still ongoing, Russia is going for further escalation," so, he believes, "if we really want to stop this escalation by Russia, we must use everything that stands in the way of expanding the war."

At the same time, he called "false" the argument that is often put forward against the supply, that it could allegedly lead to an escalation of the war, because, he emphasized, it is Russia that is escalating the conflict.

The head of the Bundestag's defense committee, Marie-Agnes Straka-Zimmermann, said that Ukraine "urgently needs Taurus missiles." In her opinion, this "is in line with international law, because if Ukraine knows where it is being attacked from, it can launch preventive strikes to stop the attacks (on it)."

"I think the problem is again in the Chancellor's (Scholz's) office, where they are trying to prevent this issue from coming to the surface," she summarized.

At the same time, Saskia Esken, co-chair of Scholz's party, admitted that her party "has never had red lines in any discussion about arms supplies," but she noted that Germany "closely coordinates its actions with its allies."
